WEEK 04 - Eels & Tigers Currently on Struggle Street

Hi everyone!

Welcome to another Tipping update! A little later than usual but hopefully it'll give everyone a urgent reminder to get their tips in because this week it's...

A 'DOUBLE YOUR POINTS' JOKER ROUND!!!

That's right! Every tip is worth 2 points! You get an All correct and you'll be bagging a whopping 24 points!! Eeeeeeek! DON'T FORGET TO GET YOUR TIPS IN!

In the NRL, there's been plenty going on.
The Melbourne Storm are now the only undefeated team in the competition and going along very nicely, while at the other end of the sprectrum we have teams like Parramatta (still winless after 4 rounds) and pre-season favourites (what a joke) the Wests Tigers struggling with injuries, suspension and poor form to find themselves 1-3.
On Fox Sports last night, Matty Johns put the hard questions to captain Robbie Farah, who, I must admit, handled himself pretty well, even though he felt he was "ambushed"

In the player signing circles, we have just seen Storm superstar halfback, Cooper Cronk announce he is staying with his unbeaten club for another 4 years, Daly Cherry Evans resigning with Manly for an additional three years while another ex-coach has poached another player to his new club with Warriors utility Lewis Brown heading to join Ivan Cleary at Penrith next season. Braith Anasta is rumoured to be heading to the Tigers and the Warriors have a big name signing set to announce soon.

Good news announced yesterday that Victoria, WA, SA and Tasmania will finally get to see LIVE Friday and Sunday rugby league on Channel Nine via the GEM channel. About bloody time. Great news! Here's the info!

In our tipping competition, BEARlythere stays top of the Tipping Championship table on 24 points. tais1 also stays in 2nd spot on 22 points while 5JS (our top tipper this week with 7) & TUMUCH share 3rd spot on 21 points. Very early days so keep getting those tips in!

5JS
with 7 points and a margin of 2. Too much!

Here's what's happened in Week Four!

SAINTS GO MARCHING ON

St George Illawarra's resurgence claimed its biggest scalp with the Dragons handing Manly back-to-back defeats for the first time in over a year with a 17-6 victory at WIN Jubilee Oval.

The Dragons, whose premiership credentials were questioned when they were humbled by Canterbury a fortnight ago, outlasted the Sea Eagles - though the win was only confirmed with Jason Nightingale's second try of the night four minutes from time.

Down 12-0 at the break, the Sea Eagles courageously got back to within a converted try despite playing with a depleted pack, before a Ben Hornby grubber was pounced upon by Nightingale.

Dragons coach Steve Price said he was glad to have his side back on track, but warned against looking too far ahead.

"That's what we prided our Dragons trademark on, being ruthless and I thought we were that tonight," said Price, now a winner of three of his first four games.

"It's been a positive start, but it's only round four."

It took all of four minutes for Michael Weyman to have the crowd on its feet, a brilliant Mitch Rein pass sending the burly prop on a 30-metre run to the line which included a delicate side-step around Manly full-back Brett Stewart.

Manly's bid for a reply was thwarted when Anthony Watmough coughed up possession as the Sea Eagles began a third straight set on the Dragons' line, and the arm-wrestle began as both sides struggled to gain an advantage.

Nightingale was denied a try by the video referee in the 23rd minute when he lost the ball over the line, but received more than a touch of good fortune when the man in the video box gave him the benefit of the doubt five minutes from the break.

A deft grubber by Kyle Stanley looked like it had been cleaned up at the back, but Nightingale picked up the scraps with the hint of a knock on before eventually swivelling his way over with the suspicion of a double movement.

Manly coach Geoff Toovey was left puzzled by the decision to award Nightingale's first try, but was happy with how a squad missing internationals Glenn Stewart, Tony Williams and Steve Matai stayed with the Dragons.

"I'm very happy with the way players that filled those positions played tonight," Toovey said.

"They're quality players ... I thought they really had a dig and with a bit of luck some of those decisions might have gone our way if we're at Brookvale."

A penalty gave Manly the chance to get on the board before the half-time hooter, but their desperation nearly backfired when Jamie Soward raced 90 metres after juggling an intercept only for his efforts to be denied as the siren sounded for an alleged knock-on.

Pleas from the Dragons for the video referee to be used were ignored by whistleblower Shayne Hayne, replays indicating the try may have had more legitimacy than the earlier Nightingale effort.

The Sea Eagles took little time to work their way back into the game with David Williams scoring after a delightful backline movement, some sleight of hand from Stewart creating an overlap for the winger to go over in the corner.

Stewart almost turned provider again when put into space by Daly Cherry-Evans, but his search for support ended with a pass sailing over the sideline.

Manly upped the ante in defence but the home side withstood the charge before Nightingale made sure of the result with his second.

Dragons: 17 (J Nightingale 2, M Weyman tries; J Soward 2/3 conversions, field goal)
Manly: 6 (D Williams try; J Lyon 1/1 conversions)

Warriors superkid Shaun Johnson sealed a length of field effort from the Warriors on a miserable Saturday night at Mt Smart Stadium against the Gold Coast Titans, who looked certain to score at the other end.
