THE HISTORY OF THE COMPETITION (1992 - 2024)

"THE BIBLE" ERA

1992 - 2003 - Ode to the Original Tipsters

This is where it all began. It was 1992, in Napier NZ.

I was a 14 old Rugby League freak (still a freak...just a lot older)

The likes of Mal Meninga, Allan Langer, Ricky Stuart and Laurie Daley were still running around in the NSWRL competition.

The Balmain Tigers, North Sydney Bears, Illawarra Steelers & the Western Suburb Magpies still existed.

Internet hadn't even surfaced yet....or mobile phones.

In high school (1992-1996) we had a Tipping Book (or Predictions Book) that got past around school classes (and out of school, staying the night at friends houses) for an entire season. Sometimes phone calls had to made at night to lock in predictions before the weekend's game.
The book was rightfully labelled as "the Bible" to all tipsters involved.

It was your basic A4 Exercise book that was laid out, rounds 1-22 + finals, with tipsters initials down the side.
The rules were (if I recall correctly), you would pick the exact score for each game.
A correct winner would land you 2 points & picking the score exactly a bonus 5 points.
If no one landed the perfect score in a match, the closest tipster/s would land an additional 3 points. Picking a draw would get you 10 points instantly.
Everyone had their own strategy. Some would play the same score every game all year while others would try and pick a draw every round (sometimes more, depending on how desperate for points they were).

I was the book keeper that would tally the points up after every round.
Based on total points on the ladder, we would have a minor premier at the end of the round robins and then a prize for winning the finals part of the season.

This went on for four years and was then continued out of school for a number of years after I moved out of the Hawkes Bay to Wellington.

In our current Tipping competition, we have original tipsters from this era still involved in my competition.
I kid you not.
Listed in no particular (and the teams they supported in the NSWRL at the time):

NZ Tiger (Balmain)
sava4 (Manly)
Feet Little (Canberra)
NO1QPRNZ (Manly)
jared francois (Balmain)
Fishboi (Manly)
The Two Time (Parramatta)
CubbyCaboose (Manly)

Take a bow!

The competition took a short hiatus between 2001-2003.

THE INTERNET ERA

2004 - Present Day

When Oztips was discovered (not the internet), it forever revolutionized this tipping competition.

In 2004, the competition started with only 16 tipsters. This year’s competition had a total of 82 tipsters, which has been the biggest turn out yet.

In 2011, the competition shifted from Oztips to Footytips after Oztips revamped their website to the displeasure of many users.

In 2022, the competition moved to its own Tipping website - Extreme Tipping - and in 2025, the NZ Tiger's NRL Tipping name was dropped & the competition simply became known as the NRL Tipping Championship.

We have 9 Tipsters still involved in our tipping competition that were in the original 16 group that signed their lives away from 2004 ;)

They are as follows:

NZtiger
scotsta
Yo Mama
feet little
NO1QPRNZ
Kiwi_Misty
Balmainadrian
sava4
pj23

Well done guys! Thanks for your support over the years!
