WEEK 03 - "Billy is freakish, absolutely freakish"

Hey folks!

Welcome to another Tipping update!

We are now 3 weeks into the NRL competition and it has been confirmed that both the Storm and Bulldogs are setting the early premiership pace with 3 wins from as many weeks.

The Storm won convincingly on the Gold Coast, 30-6 over the Titans, in which fullback superstar Billy Slater again showed why he is the best fullback to grace the rugby league field in decades. 'Billy the kid' scored two tries with Slater's second made him the leading try-scorer for a full-back in the history of the game.

It took his NRL career try tally to 130, sneaking past former Penrith full-back Rhys Wesser's previous best of 129 and his total from just three games in 2012 to six.
"He's freakish, absolutely freakish - the best I've ever seen," losing Titans coach John Cartwright said in the post match conference, shaking his head.

See Billy Slater's 2nd Try in all it's glory as voted for Try of the Week below.

The table topping Bulldogs also dealt to last year's Grand Finalists the Warriors 32-18 at Mt Smart Stadium where many visiting teams struggle to win.

Souths got their first win of the season with a comprehensive win over the Panthers at CUA Stadium, while the Sharks tasted success for the first time in 10 premiership games (since R18 last year) with an upset 17-14 win over the defending champion Seaeagles in Monday Nights Battle of the Beaches.

In our tipping competition, BEARlythere lept to the top of the Tipping Championship table with the season's first All Correct. The 12 point haul lifted him to 20 points past previous leader tais1, now in 2nd spot on 17 points. Meanwhile ootzMr Busy, Sava4 & TUMUCH share 3rd spot on 16 points.
At the bottom of the pile, Bearass landed 4 from 8 to reduce his deficit down to 3 points off 2nd to last.

Here's what's happened in Week Three!

BULLDOGS STAY UNBEATEN WITH GUTSY WIN IN NZ

Canterbury has maintained its unbeaten start to the NRL season by repelling a Warriors fightback to secure a 32-18 victory in a thriller in Auckland.

Centre Jonathan Wright's second try five minutes from time sealed the win after both sides had produced a second-half nailbiter on Sunday.

The try was set up by full-back Ben Barba, who moments earlier had denied opposite Kevin Locke with a tackle in the corner.

Substitute Joel Romelo grabbed the visitors' sixth try in the final minute to blow out the final margin.

Dogs coach Des Hasler said his side's 15/18 completions in the second half got them back in the game.

"One of our tasks was to complete well against this side. We started doing it well, but we fell away with only 12 to go in the first half," he said after the match.

"We addressed that and we were able to keep our noses with them."

It was the third week in a row the Warriors had had to play catch-up as a rampaging Bulldogs raced to an early 16-0 lead.

The introduction of Feleti Mateo and Ben Matulino off the bench midway through the opening half kick-started the Warriors fightback, Mateo providing the ball-playing and Matulino the grunt up the middle.

The pair combined for a Mateo try that eventually took the Warriors ahead early in the second spell.

James Maloney's conversion took the home side 18-16 ahead to the delight of a noisy 17,067-strong Mt Smart Stadium crowd.

But the Bulldogs nudged themselves back in front when prop Sam Kasiano, one of their best of the afternoon, barged over by the posts.

In a grandstand finish, Bulldogs prop Aiden Tolman was put on report for a high tackle on Maloney in the 70th minute, before Barba's heroics in defence and then in attack helped to clinch the victory.

"It's great for his confidence, he is a special player who needs to come up with those special plays," Hasler said of Barba.

Warriors coach Brian McClennan said his side needs to work on getting out of the blocks quicker, but was proud of their character and composure to get back in the contest.

"It would be nice to see how another team plays against us if we were up 10-nil or 16-nil," he told the media.

"That hasn't happened yet and that's the challenge for us.

McClennan said coming back from so far behind eventually caught up with his charges.

"There were periods. while we were trying to catch up, where we earnt a bit of field position and we were a bit frantic and lost a bit of our structure," he said.

"When you are doing that, you are burning a lot of energy.

"So when we didn't grab the try we needed, it was no surprise the Dogs grabbed a couple of tries at the end."

Bulldogs: 32 (J Wright 2, B Barba, S Kasiano, J Romelo, S Turner tries; S Turner 4/6 conversions) Warriors: 18 (S Lousi, J Maloney, F Mateo tries; J Maloney 3/3 conversions)

Storm superstar Billy Slater again scores another brilliant try from a bomb kick, plucking the ball from the air to put the final nail in the Titan's coffin, and in the process, made it a hat-trick of doubles to start the 2012 NRL season. WOW.
